Sensible First Five-Inch — Cheat Sheet
A decision reference, not a tutorial: for the full build order, soldering steps and safety checkpoints, see 5″ Freestyle Quad. This page exists so you can pick parts in ten minutes instead of re-deriving every tradeoff from the component pages. Prices drift constantly and vary by region — read the numbers below as ratios between tiers, not quotes.
What actually matters (read this before the table)
- Get 6S right, not maximized. 6S is the sensible default today (see Battery) — don't chase 4S "because it's cheaper" or 8S+ "because it's more." Neither buys you anything on a first build.
- Buy ESC current headroom, not the flashiest motor. An underrated ESC is the single most common cause of early "mystery" desyncs and dead smoke. See ESC.
- A soft-mounted flight controller saves more tuning pain than any PID fiddling ever will. Vibration isolation is cheap; chasing noise in a blackbox log after the fact is not. See Flight Controller.
- Cheap polycarbonate props are fine to crash-test. A cracked prop is never fine to fly — replace it, don't inspect it. See Propellers.
- Buy what your local pilots already fly, not the newest limited-edition part. Spares compatibility at the field matters more than a marginally better spec sheet.
- Skip a name-brand frame on build one. Frames are the part most likely to meet a tree; spend there only once you know your crash rate.

The one-tier-per-part trap
Tiers don't have to match across the whole build. A very common, sensible mix is sensible everywhere except the frame (buy cheap, expect to crash it) and budget-to-sensible on the camera/VTX (the digital jump is a real ecosystem decision, not just a spec upgrade — decide it on its own merits, not as part of a blanket "no-compromise" build). Don't feel obligated to pick one column and stay in it top to bottom.
